Thurmaston is a suburban village immediately north of Leicester's city boundary, making it a great base for exploring both the city and Charnwood's countryside. Straddling the old Fosse Way Roman road and the eastern bank of the River Soar, Thurmaston has grown into a bustling locale where modern amenities and scenic spots sit side by side.

On one hand, it's home to Thurmaston Shopping Centre (also known as Thurmaston Retail Park) – a convenient complex of big-name stores and restaurants that draw shoppers from across north Leicester.

On the other hand, nature is never far away: the entire western edge of Thurmaston borders Watermead Country Park, a vast landscaped nature reserve of lakes, wetlands, and trails. Footpaths lead from the village into the park, where you can wander amid wildflowers, go birdwatching, or cycle along the towpath. Thurmaston even has two marinas on the canal, reflecting the village's boating scene – you'll see colourful narrowboats moored here, and can often chat with friendly boaters about their journeys.

Historically, Thurmaston was known for framework knitting and it once had a train station on the old Midlands main line (Thurmaston Station closed in the 1960s). A charming nod to local history is the "Drummer Boy" statue in the village. The statue commemorates William Lane, who was shot and killed by a local man as he passed through the village after being on recruitment duty.

Today's Thurmaston is thoroughly modern in outlook. Whether you're stopping off for some shopping, a meal, or a stroll by the water, Thurmaston offers a bit of city convenience without losing touch with nature.
